The Latest Cybersecurity Studies Reveal How Cybersecurity is Prioritized [Weekly Cybersecurity Brief]

2021 has been quite a year for cybersecurity events from high-profile attacks to significant investments. Now that we are more than halfway through the year, it is worth questioning how and if such news has shifted perspective and action when it comes to cybersecurity practices. This week, we take a look at some of the findings resulting from recent cybersecurity studies.

In a study on leadership, Ponemon revealed that “Lack of awareness and gaps in knowledge are a weak link,” according to Help Net Security. For its survey, Ponemon questioned nearly 1,800 cybersecurity professionals about their thoughts on “external threat hunting.” Not only did the study find that around half of the attacks reported by organizations were carried out by repeat offenders, but the study also found that 61% of the victims were unable to repair the vulnerabilities exposing them to risk. However, when it comes to preventing such occurrences, only 35% stated that they felt as if their approach was supporting security analysts effectively. There was also inconsistency in how preventative measures such as “threat hunting” are even defined. Only 24% categorized it as monitoring the cybersecurity environment, while a majority saw it as taking reactive action.

Another study, commissioned by Intrusion, concluded that 52% of IT/Security decision-makers have gone through some version of a data breach even when equipped with cybersecurity budgets. Out of the 450 respondents, 61% reported still being “very concerned” over the potential of cyberattacks. When it comes to solutions to this concern, 28% valued the effectiveness of the cybersecurity team, 19% were more supportive of relying in the right products and more than half favored a mix of both a strong team and suite of tools.

While it is clear that teams may still struggle with how to properly address issues, there may be some industries that are still struggling to even prioritize cybersecurity. A report released by CyberMDX and Philips summarized that healthcare organizations are still falling short in implementing impactful cybersecurity strategies. The “Perspectives in Healthcare Security Report” examined the attitudes toward cybersecurity of 130 hospital executives in Information Technology and Information Security, BioMed technicians, and engineers. Although 48% reported having had to carry out a forced or proactive shut down of systems due to an attack, less than 11% of those surveyed said that cybersecurity spending was a high priority when budgeting. Additionally, the study shared that over half of the biomed professionals felt that more team members were needed on their staffs.
