The Value of an Internship in Private Equity and Cybersecurity [Weekly Cybersecurity Brief]

Internships offer a fantastic way to get your foot in the door in almost any industry, but they are particularly valuable in cybersecurity and the fields surrounding it. Not only do they add a boost to your resume, but they offer the opportunity to gain firsthand experience and network with the team members that could be your eventual colleagues. Beyond preparing you for your future career, internships are also essential to the companies hosting them. They provide the chance to learn from and incorporate new and varying perspectives in an industry that significantly benefits from forward-thinking and diversity. So, this week, we dive into the growing importance of these roles.

According to Cybersecurity Ventures, there will be an estimated 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by 2025. That means that there are likely to be plenty of positions readily available for interns who enter the field. So, how can they enter the field? One way is by taking on a summer internship, which companies would be taking applications for now as they set their budgets. So, as you look for such opportunities, one of the first steps is to consider what area of cybersecurity you are interested in and what type of organization you see yourself working for. Is it government cybersecurity? Is it a specialty offered by a startup? There is an array of options. Next is identifying ways to connect with those in that field or at the company you are aiming for. Networking may be just the right key for opening that door. Lastly, think about how you can frame your skills. Jimmie Lenz, director of the Master of Engineering in cybersecurity and Master of Engineering in fintech programs at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering, recommends communicating both your macro and micro understanding of cybersecurity. As Lenz stated to Fortune Education, “I hear more and more from [the] industry that technical experience is great, but if you don’t have a good understanding of the legal, policy, and regulatory side of things, that’s going to hamper your advancement.”

But it is not just the potential interns that benefit from landing one of these positions. Companies also have a lot to gain from bringing on these new hires. As those unfulfilled roles increase, companies with interns are already taking the initiative to tap into the talent that can occupy those positions while already having a familiarity with the work and culture. Even better, the act of bringing in interns could give organizations the competitive advantage of diversifying their teams. For instance, Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) announced in September that it would be rolling out its student internship program. In doing so, the nonprofit organization dedicated to the recruitment, retention and advancement of women in cybersecurity, has partnered with companies such as Amazon Web Services, Aristocrat, Bloomberg, Cisco, Dell Technologies, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Lockheed Martin, Microsoft and Navy Federal Credit Union, to ensure that there is a more direct pipeline for this crucial talent pool to break into the field.

Companies are also looking to work directly with colleges and universities to expand their internship reach. After making a pledge in May to train 150,000 people in cybersecurity over the next three years, IBM has launched a project that brings them together with 20 historically Black higher education institutions to create Cybersecurity Leadership Centers. These centers will serve as free training and certification grounds for students to access resources including coursework, mentorships, and internship opportunities.
