Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 [Weekly Cybersecurity Brief]

October is here which means that it is officially Cybersecurity Awareness Month. An annual tradition established by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), the campaign seeks each year to galvanize people and organizations around enhancing cyber protection. The theme for 2022 is “See Yourself in Cyber,” and it focuses on “helping all individuals and organizations make smart decisions whether on the job, at home, or at school, now and in the future,” as described at Dark Reading. This theme could not come up at a more relevant time since breaches are impacting all sectors and levels that make them up. Whether a corporation, school or policy creator, cybersecurity is a topic more than worth addressing throughout this month, the next and beyond.

In honor of Cybersecurity Awareness Month and this year’s theme, Dark Reading caught up with leaders at some of today’s largest companies to see how they are expanding their efforts. A representative from Amazon shared that the global giant is spending this October hosting its annual One Amazon Security Conference for all Amazon employees. It includes 70 sessions covering topics such as data protection and identity and access management. Meanwhile, Srinath Kuruvardi, the head of cloud security at Netflix, shared that the streaming leader will be presenting talks with FBI special agents to shed light on threat trends. Cisco is also participating in the theme by releasing resources that support initiatives such as inclusivity, cybersecurity during mergers and acquisitions and consumer safety best practices.

While companies spend this Cybersecurity Awareness Month producing ways to engage in the topic, other sectors are also pushing for more action. As reported by CNN, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently called for federal officials to increase efforts to protect consumers from cyberattacks. “I am calling on the Federal Trade Commission, first, to ensure that companies do everything they can to protect consumer data, and on the Department of Justice to fully investigate and go after the hackers that aim to harm Americans,” Schumer stated. During his comments at a news conference, he pointed to examples such as data breaches impacting Uber and American Airlines just last month to highlight this pressing need.

But as another case reminds us, it is more than companies and government agencies that need to be concerned with cybersecurity. It is also our local schools. Over Labor Day weekend, Vice Society posted that it had stolen data from the Los Angeles school system via a ransomware attack. Now, according to Cybersecurity Dive, that information is beginning to appear online. While the full damage of this incident has yet to be determined, the Los Angeles Times reported that social security numbers and W-9 forms may be at risk of exposure. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said that the district will not pay the ransom being demanded as its funds are meant for students, not malicious actors. The school is currently working with law enforcement, the FBI and the CISA on the matter.
