Black Hat 2020 [Cybersecurity Brief]

Black Hat is known as the world’s leading information security event, with experts attending from around the globe. Just yesterday, Black Hat virtually completed its 23rd jam-packed conference. As the members of our O3V team reflect on the event, we put together three main themes that were emphasized throughout.

Election Security: The depth of this topic has just begun. With the election being just three short months away, officials are scrambling to implement the most secure voting measures as possible. Matt Blaze, security researcher and opening speaker at the conference, stated that cyber experts are needed now more than ever to help tackle the complexity of our country’s voting predicament. Red Hat speakers communicated that an army of well-equipped cyber experts are needed to protect our voting rights moving into the election.

Ransomware: Ransomware attacks are more prevalent than ever. Within the last few weeks major organizations such as Twitter and Cannon were hit with attacks leading to privacy breaches for consumers and the organizations themselves. These constant attacks were not left unacknowledged by the Black Hat speakers. Experts stressed the importance of needing secure systems along with ways to implement safer systems, no matter the size of your organization.

Remote Work: The global pandemic quickly forced organizations to switch from a typical office setting, to a remote environment. The downside to this is that many companies were not prepared to make the virtual leap, leaving their systems vulnerable. Now that working remotely is here to stay, Black Hat attendees were able to identify the level of security that is needed to protect the future of the workplace.

These are the three red-hot topics in today’s cyber world. According to the latest Gartner forecast, information security spending is expected to grow 2.4% to reach $123.8 billion in 2020. This means that even more is to come in 2021. Cyber experts better hold on tight.
